Snow Country Stories Japan’ is a bi-weekly podcast for anyone who thinks that escaping modern life, to live or travel in Japan's legendary ‘yukiguni’ (snow country) is a good idea. You can expect stories about life in the snow, mountains and villages, traditions and myths, old ways and new. We’ll talk about skiing and snowboarding, national parks, old houses, festivals and music, temples and shrines, artisans, breweries and distilleries, food, travel and a whole lot more. Known as ‘yukiguni’ in Japanese, snow country refers to regions of Japan defined by their deep snow of winter and lifestyles shaped by it. A place of beauty and tradition all year round, this podcast brings you the stories of people carving out lives in Japan’s yukiguni. It’s an invitation to visit or better yet, come to stay and grow old with us in the snow country.

About your host

Snow Country Stories Japan is hosted by Peter Carnell, an Australian freelance tour guide and writer based in Nagano, Japan.

Having held an interest in traditional cultures from a young age, Peter studied a Bachelor of Archaeology in the United Kingdom and a Master of Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies in Australia. Working as a tour guide and writer in Japan since 2017, Peter launched the podcast in March 2023 and hopes listeners find the stories of the snow country as captivating as he does.
